Hawk’s HPS 5.0 pad is an updated compound based on their popular HPS pads. They produce less dust and noise than the OEM Pagid pads, and can handle occasional track duty. These are a great brake pad for people that drive aggressively, and for people that do a track day or two each year and don’t want to bother with dedicated track pads.

These are the pads I use on my daily-driven, supercharged 2007 V8 Vantage. They do have more brake dust than the Porterfield R4-S but I think it’s a reasonable amount, and the Hawk HPS 5.0 pads can handle abuse beyond the capabilities of the Porterfield R4-S. With proper installation and bedding-in, the HPS 5.0 does not squeal.

The R4 pads are the racing version of Porterfield’s R4-S brake pads. The R4 pads are built to handle track duty and racing, but aren’t ideal for street driving. Yes, they can handle it and aren’t terrible when cold, but they do make a LOT of noise and dust!

The chamfering ensures the R4-S pads are smooth and silent, but reduces the surface area of the pad. While this is design is ideal for street use, the reduced surface area limits this pad’s ability to handle track duty. The R4, on the other hand, sacrifices quiet road manners for outright braking performance by having a more aggressive pad compound and maximum surface area.

If you’re using your car for normal or spirited driving and want the best dust-free pads around, look no further than the Porterfield R4-S. These pads have an absurdly low level of dust and are incredibly quiet, making them ideal for someone that doesn’t need to worry about aggressive driving or track days.

A great way to handle both easy street driving and hardcore track days is to have a set of both the R4-S and R4 pads, and swap between as needed for street and track use.

Redpants worked directly with Porterfield to solve a common complaint from Aston Martin owners: the chirping sound that sometimes comes from the parking brakes at very low speeds. Not only are these pads chamfered to prevent that chirping, they’re also made from Porterfield’s incredibly popular R4-S compound!
